Foodies & collector types should set aside some time this wkend (& next) for the estate sale of Waltrina Stovall, ex-dining critic/vintage columnist at the Dallas Morning News. Stovall, who remains alive, is a well-known collector of vintage memorabilia, w/ special emphasis on food-related items incl. prized glassware & pottery, aluminum trays, and the motherlode: a stash of 3,000+ cookbooks. An inveterate smoker, she also has a fascinating collex of ashtrays, lighters, & other incendiary gadgets. The sale’s curated by Ralph Willard, one of Dallas’ best-known estate-sale gurus; for a sneak preview of the stuff, hit www.24-7estatesales.com

the options for today:
1. Spend 2 hrs writing about one of the many cool new prods & restaurants I know of (hate to gloat, but ha ha) 2. Pay the bills and skip the blog altogether today or 3. try something weird/new which is to spotlight a few blogs I’ve met lately. As opposed to the ones over on the right such as Cookie Madness and Tristram Shandy that you can always visit.

This ranks as one of the lamest, shilliest, flakkiest NYCE items ever but due to oppressive deadlines, the alternative is no item at all. It’s coffee-related. Sorta. Ack on with it: Coffee-Mate is sponsoring a contest where we “Americans” can vote 4 the next new flavor. Democracy! (Pray there are no Ohio-esque poll machine snafus.) The choices are (w/Nestle-generated descriptions intact, cuz that’s the best part, other than the jingoistic title of the campaign, “America Chooses”):
- Vanilla Chai Spice: warmth of exotic spices w/the deliciously indulgent creamy taste
- Choc Orange Truffle: dark chocolate mocha w/ an orange citrus infusion
- Tres Leches: indulgence of moist yellow cake drenched w/ traditional flavors
- Coconut Creme: A velvety smooth and sweet coconut flavor
Don’t they sound like words are missing? Anyway, voting runs thru Feb 12 & the winner will be announced, oddly enough, at a “Rock the Flavor” launch concert on Apr 22 at the Experience Music Project in Seattle. (see, they sold out too.)

Cool Whip French Vanilla appears to have been intro’d in 2003 but it’s new to NYCE so here’s an item. Whaddya spose is the diff between regular cool whip & French vanilla? Wiki sez FV = “strong vanilla aroma” + “originates from the French style of making ice cream w/ egg yolks“. The odd thing izzat this is limited to fall & winter only. Duzzn’t that seem odd, that a ahem shelf-stable-type prod such as cool whip (imitation whipped cream containing no milk prods, intro’d in 1965) would have a ltd ed? And what izzit about French vanilla that makes it a winter flavor
*sorry about the generic foto; kraft website duzzn’t have any prod shots at all

it’s another great image brought to you by marc, the indian scout of NYCE: “TGIF” done in fruit, specifically asian pears (the T), golden delicious apples (g), braeburns - or are they galas? (i), and strawberries (f). i guess fridays will be an evolving thing but for today TGIF will do, if for no other reason than the first two letters have an inexplicably pleasing quality, n’est-ce pas?
